Mnoho chovatelů říká, že se čivavy považují za velké psy a někteří se dokonce chovají, jako kdyby nikdo větší neexistoval. Ale i mezi těmito tvorečky se najdou tací, kteří se bojí i vlastního stínu. Obecně ale mívají opravdu velké sebevědomí a velkou odvahu. Trochu se tím podobají teriérům. Mezi jejich vlastnosti patří i výrazně vyvinutý teritoriální instinkt a cizím lidem raději nedůvěřují a bývají dost hlasité, což z nich činí dobré hlídače - hlásiče. Majitel by je měl ale i chránit a hlídat si je, protože je známo několik případů, kdy tito pejsci zmizeli, když někde čekali na svého páníčka.
Asi jako u všech plemen i tady je velmi důležitá socializace, která se nesmí opomenout již u štěňat. Včasný kontakt s lidmi a ostatními psy bývá rozhodující, aby z něho vyrostl sebevědomý jedinec, ale také obtížný. Mnoho chovatelů má snahu dávat štěňata k odběru až ve stáří 3 měsíců či ještě později. Z hlediska tělesného vývoje štěňatům delší pobyt u matky jen prospěje a eliminuje se i riziko úrazů v nechráněném a novém prostředí, ale pokud sám chovatel nevyráží s psími drobečky na procházky, nebere je do společnosti ostatních lidí a psů a nevozí je autem, pejskové mohou promeškat jedno z nejdůležitějších období v životě a mohou se z nich stát lekaví tvorečkové, závislí na svých lidech nebo dokonce i útočící na vše kolem. Agresivita i bázlivost přitom u čivav patří mezi vylučující vady. I přehnaná opatrnost nového majitele může vést ke stejným výsledkům. Sladit požadavky na bezpečnost maličkého štěněte se socializací je jedním z nejtěžších úkolů, jakým jsou nový majitelé nejmenších psů světa vystaveni.
Mezi vlastnosti čivavy podle standardu patří kompaktnost, mrštnost, pozornost, temperament a velká odvaha. Pohyb je pružný, energický, umožňující přiměřené sportovní zatížení - např. miniagility, dogdancing.
Standard nepředepisuje velikost plemene, neudává kohoutkovou výšku, pouze hmotnost, která by se měla pohybovat mezi 1,5 až 3 kilogramy. Těžší jedinci už jsou diskvalifikováni stejně jako ti, kteří váží méně než půl kilogramu. A tak by si chovatelé měli najít spíše větší fenky s delším trupem, vystavovatelé menší jedince s typickým výrazem a lidé, kteří hledají spíše mazlíčky a kamarády vitální zvířata, která váží i o něco více.
Standard připouští i jakoukoliv barvu či barevnou kombinaci ve všech odstínech s výjimkou merle. Vybrat si můžete mezi dlouhosrstou i krátkosrstou varietou. Krátkosrsté čivavy bývají sebevědomější, s větším sklonem k dominanci a žárlivosti. Oplývají schopností prosadit se jako vůdci smečky i mezi většími psy. Dlouhosrstí kolegové jsou pokládáni za citlivější, podřízenější, mazlivější a závislejší na svém majiteli. Ale také více střídají své nálady. S tím vším souvisí i kouzlo genetiky. Chov se pro chovatele stává malým dobrodružstvím skýtajícím prostor k experimentu a uplatnění svých znalostí právě v tomto oboru.
